The March 18 Movement - Bloggers should not be killed

The March 18 Movement was named in order to honor Omid Reza Mirsayafi, who on that date in 2009 became the first blogger to die in prison. Each March 18 from now on shall stand as a day of memorial to Omid and to all the innocents he represents. Bloggers should not be killed, neither by execution nor neglect, for what they have written. We also believe in free speech as a human right, not a function of culture or politics, and believe it to be a necessity for building and maintaining functional societies. That's a good point (except WWI, that had little to do with imperialism and more to do with political alliances). But there are counterexamples too. It was ideas, not guns, that forced the militarily superior U.S. to withdraw from the Vietnam War. Violence has so far failed to bring peace to the Middle East. And many countries in Africa are plagued by repeated violent overthrows of government. Defensive violence is sometimes necessary, but violence as a way to conduct politics is insane.	cometkite
